The original SMA design called for two compliant connectors :
SMA Female Connector
SMA Male Connector
The FCC has introduced changes regarding the use of this type of connectors regarding Part 15 compliance, which means that all SMA RF connectors are changing gender (center pin).
The modification by the FCC was instituted to prevent home users from damaging RF (home WiFi) equipment when screwing an antenna. If all antennas are female, there is no way to damage the center connector. Therefore to be compatible with FCC regulations it is necessary to use the connectors called
RP-SMA connector (where RP stands for "reverse polarity").
RP-SMA Connectors
The only thing that changed with FCC Part 15 compliance was the center pin, thus reversing the polarity of the connection and forming a "new" standard; the reverse biased SMA (RP-SMA). The RP (reverse polarity) is named after its "gender of the wire" and has an opposite sex pin. The next two photos are considered reverse polarized (RP-SMA)
